In recent years, there has been increasing public attention and legislative activity at all levels of government relating to the care and treatment of dogs. As responsible dog owners and breeders, we all want to ensure that those who mistreat animals are held accountable for their actions. However, legislation to address such issues should not have a negative impact on people who own, show, breed, raise, and train dogs in a responsible manner. Breed-specific laws and breeder restrictions can impact your right to own and breed dogs.

This presentation will provide an overview of the types of canine policy proposals, strategies utilized by animal rights activists, and what the American Kennel Club Government Relations Department is doing about it all here in the United States. Come learn about the tools available and your role in preventing the adoption of laws where you live that would undermine your rights as responsible breeders.

    The Bulldog Club of America is profoundly dismayed regarding the breeding and registration changes, adopted by the Raad van Beheer (the Kennel Club of the Netherlands) relative to certain breeds, which include the Bulldog.  The Raad van Beheer recently made the changes to comply with mandates from the Dutch government. The stated reason for the changes is to improve the health and welfare of various breeds; however, the decision appears to be based on selected research, often not evidence based.

    Pets are susceptible to some types of coronavirus, but there is currently only limited evidence that domestic animals can get sick from this novel form[1]. A cat in Belgium, a tiger at Bronx Zoo tested positive and were showing symptoms[3][12] while two asymptomatic dogs in China tested positive; one has since died of unknown causes.
