BCA NATIONAL SPECIALTY / G. M. BECKETT AWARDS FOR 1991

 BCA National Specialty

With a record entry of 344 dogs, the 1992 Bulldog Club of American National Specialty show was held on November 5-6, 1992, at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Cromwell, Connecticut. The week’s activities included three specialty shows and educational and judges seminars, among other activities, and was hosted by the Long Island Bulldog Club.

Russell Thomas, the BCA Education chairperson, conducted the judges seminar, and Dr. Kenneth Abrahams spoke on ophthalmology with relation to the Bulldog. A panel of experienced breeders answered questions from the audience at a Friday evening program. All of these activities were extremely well attended.

George Davis judged an entry of 13 dogs in the obedience competition. The highest scoring dog, with a score of 194 ½, was Paradox HR Michael Jordan, CD, TD, owned by Dorothy Wysaski of Aurora, Wisconsin.

The sweepstakes competition was judged by Doris Boyd (bitches) and Micki Potter Brown (dogs and Best in Sweeps). Bredt’s Computer, owned by Elmer Bredt of Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania, was selected Best in Sweepstakes, and Cannell’s Arnold the Terminator, owned by Ron and Katherine Cannell of Luther, Michigan, received the Best of Opposite Sex in Sweeps honor. There was an entry of 141 in the sweeps competition.

Dr. John Little judged the dog and intersex classes, and Dean Anderson judged the bitch classes. Little selected Ch. Glyndebourne Baritone as Best of Breed. He is owned by Jon and Pat Garrity and Claire Tomlinson of Shrewsbury, Masscahusetts. Ch. Powerbull’s Mugsie Anne III, owned by Dan and Toni Powers of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, was named Best of Opposite Sex.

The Best of Winners award went to Winners dog and Best Puppy. Lady Luck Special, owned by Patricia and John Merkt and Lillian Tiffany of Phelan, California. Winners Bitch was Fidelis Kiss Me Kate, owned by Susan and Bob Rodenski of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Millcoat’s Geronimo, owned by Duwane and Caroline Miller of Derby, Kansas, was Reserve Winners Dog, and Glyndebourne Madonna, owned by Teresa Gutzman, Patricia Murphy and Claire Tomlinson of Amesburg, Massachusetts, was Reserve Winners Bitch.

Best Beteran Dog went to Ch. Tonbray’s Garth of Thunder Bay, owned by Dorthea and Tedd Begeman of Caro, Michigan. Ch. Gyrene April Love Bowag, owned by Beverly and O’Neill Wagner, and Pat and Don Butcher of Jopa, Maryland, won the Veteran Bitch class.

The Stud Dog class winner was T-Town Farmer Roy, owned by Robert and Sandra Walter, of Toledo, Ohio. Ch. Fidelis Darlin Mary Poppins, owned by bob and Susan Rodenski, won Best Brood Bitch. Best Junior Handler was Aimee Gray of Peekskill, New York,

The Long Island Bulldog Club specialty was held on November 7, 1992. Judges were Hank Williams for dogs and intersex, and Anne Hier for bitches. The third show was the BCA Division I specialty. Mary Lou Lofdahl judged dogs and intersex, and William Kenney judged bitches.

  1. M. Beckett Awards for 1991

The following announcement has been issued by Jane R. Lamarine of Meriden, Connecticut. She is treasurer of the G. M. Beckett Award Committee:

“The G. M. Beckett Memorial Committee is happy to announce the 1991 winners of [our] annual awards, which are given to the breeder(s) of the American-bred sire [that has produced] the greatest number of champion get during a five-year period, [as well as] to the breeder of the American-bred dam [that has produced] the greatest number of champion offspring during a five-year period. This year’s awards covered the five-year period between January 1, 1987 and December 31, 1991.

“The breeders of the winning sire are Rod and Mel Berger of Yukon, Oklahoma, and their Ch. Melrods Fabulous Freddy, who produced 16 champion get.

“The Bergers [also bred] one of the two winning dams [that] tied with six champion [offspring] each, Ch. Tomel’s New Venture. The second winning dam is Hug-O-Bull’s Moonglow Smasher, bred by Karl Foerster and Ray Knudson of Salem, Wisconsin.

“Our congratulations to all of these breeders and their fine Bulldogs!”
